Alan has been involved in passive fire protection for more than 40 years, having joined the fire protection division of Pilkington Insulations in 1981.
From 1991 he worked for installer Checkmate Fire as director and managing director until 2017,….. when in the throes of leaving with the intention of retiring the Grenfell Tower fire occurred and he could see that things were going to change – and wanted to be involved in the changes,
…. so he did some consultancy work for BRE Academy including updating their fire door inspection training module.
Then 4 years ago he set up a passive fire protection consultancy called Golden Thread Fire in partnership with a long established installation company called Fire Delay.
He is also an active member of NAHFO – the NHS Fire Officers Association. In 2019 he helped write a paper on how to inspect fire doors in healthcare buildings which was used to create a Reference Document that was NFCC peer reviewed and approved. It has since been converted into a GENERIC document that can be used and adopted for other types of buildings. He is now helping to write a complementary document focused on Fire Dampers, Firestopping and Cavity Barriers.
